Custom field types should not be user creatable because in this case they are visible in the complete farm which may not be the intention.

Resolution

Set the property 'UserCreatable' to 'FALSE' in a custom field type. In shared SharePoint environments custom field types should not be user creatable unless cration of fields through the web frontend is required in all site collections where the solution is deployed.
