Oversharing
Also known as: over-sharing, excessive sharing
Oversharing is when files, sites, or workspaces are shared more widely than they should be, giving people access to content they do not need. Common causes include broad "everyone" links, inherited permissions, and forgotten guest access. Oversharing is a leading data-security risk in Microsoft 365 and SharePoint, and it becomes more dangerous once Copilot can surface the exposed content instantly to any user who has access to it.
Oversharing quietly accumulates as people share links to get work done. Over time, sensitive documents end up reachable by far more users than intended, often across an entire organization.
Why it is risky
Every over-permissioned item is a potential data leak. The risk multiplies with Copilot, which can instantly find and summarize content a user technically has access to, even if no one ever intended them to see it.
