Create a Custom Object

Custom Metadata is in Preview. Contact your Customer Success Manager to request access.

A Custom Object is an inventory of your own, for example a list of cost centers, business units, or SAP project codes, that other objects can relate to through a Custom Relation.

To create a Custom Object, you will need to:

  1. On the Inventory page, click “Inventory Options” ([…]) and select “Manage your metadata”.
  2. Click the ellipses menu ([…]) in the top-right of Manage your metadata and select ”+ Add custom object”.
  3. On “Basic Info” give the object a “Display name” and description under “Details”.
    • Click “Next”.
  4. On “Data Source” choose whether to import the object’s properties from a CSV or Excel file, or set up the fields manually.
    • If using a file data source, select “Upload a CSV or Excel file”.
      1. Click “Browse”, navigate to the desired file, and click “Open”.
      2. A dialog appears showing the imported properties, their inferred type, and a sample value. Click “Next”.
      3. Make any changes to the imported properties.
        1. To change the name, description, or data type, hover over the property and click the edit icon. Make the changes and click “Update”.
        2. Reorder the properties by clicking the left side of a property and dragging it to the desired position.
      4. Click “Save”.
    • If you plan to create the property fields manually, click “Skip and set up fields manually”.
      1. Click “Next”.
      2. Click ”+ Add property”.
      3. Enter the “Display name”, “Description”, and data type for the property.
      4. Select whether a default value is used and whether the property is visible in the Teams App.
      5. Click “Add”.
      6. Repeat the steps above to add additional properties.
      7. Once all properties are entered, reorder them as described above.
  5. Click “Save”.

Once created, the object’s inventory appears alongside the built-in inventories. Add instances to it one at a time, or bring them in from a file or a SharePoint source. See Connect a Data Source for Custom Metadata.

All Custom Objects Share One Group

Every Custom Object you create sits in the same Custom Objects group in the inventory list. You can rename the group and change its icon for your Environment, but each object keeps the group’s icon, individual objects are told apart by name only. Each Custom Object is turned on or off on its own, like any inventory, the group itself has no single switch.

Relating Other Objects to It

To link a built-in object, for example a Team, to an instance of a Custom Object, create a Custom Relation between them. See Create a Custom Relation.
