Throttling
Also known as: Microsoft 365 throttling, API throttling
Throttling is how Microsoft 365 limits the requests an application or user can send in a period of time. Rencore Governance pauses scanning when it is throttled, so no scanned data is lost.
When a limit is exceeded, Microsoft returns HTTP status 429 and rejects further requests from that client for a while. Rencore Governance keeps a steady, low request load.
Throttling is set by Microsoft and applies to every application that reads a tenant, not only to Rencore Governance.
For example, reading the file metadata of a very large SharePoint library can reach the limit. Rencore Governance then pauses and continues later, so the scan takes longer but stays complete.
What it means for you
Throttling does not affect your tenant or your users. It only means that data in Rencore Governance can take longer to be up to date. Throttling is rare and mostly happens when Rencore Governance reads file metadata from very large SharePoint libraries or OneDrive drives, or Entra ID audit logs. You can turn off those object types if you do not need them.
