External user

Also known as: guest user, external guest, external member

An external user is an account whose home tenant belongs to another organization, invited into your tenant to work with you.

Microsoft distinguishes four user types: internal and external members, and internal and external guests. Rencore Governance shows each user’s type, and policies flag external users, inactive external users and groups or teams with external owners or members.

External and guest are two separate properties. External means the home tenant is not yours. Guest means the User Type is Guest. An internal guest has its home in your tenant but the Guest type, and an external member was invited but has the Member type.

For example, a policy flags inactive external users, and an automation can disable their accounts. Teams policies flag teams with external users and shared channels with external access.

External users do not count as licensed users for Rencore Governance. Internal guests with a license do count.
